Funny how that wasn't in most of the news articles on the subject.
The new LGBT highschool in NY is not just a public institution. It turns out that it's gotten major grants from private sources, and the city is only providing partial funding. Just like they do for religious schools.

It seems to burn some people up that this school is getting tax dollars, but I don't see them using the same soapbox to protest that Catholic schools get state and federal funding.

In fact, the Harvey Milk School isn't even using tax dollars to pay or their web hosting. It's all donations rom private groups.

I find it interesting how so many news sources makes it look like it's nothing but tax contributions.

I can't decide if it's a cool idea or a disturbing one, it does rather seem to be segregating kids out and I'm not entirely sure if I would have wanted to go to such a place when I was growing up...high school was rough in a lot of ways but given how few actual straight friends I have now a days, I imagine it would have been much worse if I'd only known gay people.

Then again, it would have been nice to date in high school ;-)

At least these kids have a choice. If they were forced into the school, it would be disturbing. This just gives them the option of getting into an environment that will be designed to help them be safer.

I have to wonder how much safer it will be, though. Even if the school itself is safe from bashing it does give people a rather large target for such things. I guess only time will tell that though.

Of course, the reason we have the Harvey Milk School is that het teenagers make it impossible for some LGBT kids to go to school safely. The chancellor alluded to that--he didn't specify "het" but he did say that the idea is for these teens to be able to learn without being harassed--but I'll bet the people who object to the school aren't mentioning that either.

I think the sad commentary underlying this is that in some ways it sounds like they've given up on trying to educate het teens and find methods of stopping the bashing. Creating a whole new school doesn't stop homophobia.

All news reports should be taken with a grain of salt. I have yet to find an unbiased source of news. It upsets me to see how easily even free-thinking people allow themselves to be led into these assumptions by the media at large.

Yesterday I watched the news for he first time in several months, and noticed that while they were reporting a story about HIV, they were showing videos of men walking together hand-in-hand interspersed with shots of the rainbow flag for about a minute and a half before they even mentioned new cases among gay and bisexual men.
